Why Settle on the Moon?
A lunar settlement, while initially reliant on Earth, holds the potential to evolve into a self-sustaining entity, contributing to a burgeoning "Earth-Moon system economy"—a natural successor to our current global economy. Ian Crawford's 2014 review highlighted the Moon's rich resources: water ice, metals, rare Earth elements, and the coveted Helium-3. These resources are pivotal for habitability and can fuel a lunar industrial base, crucial for all future human endeavors in the solar system. Economically viable resources like Helium-3 could even be transported back to Earth. Beyond industry, the Moon offers a unique platform for an international research hub, akin to the ISS. Space tourism presents another avenue, with private enterprises already eyeing lunar trips. Critically, a lunar outpost serves as an ideal sanctuary for preserving Earth's human culture and biological data, shielded from terrestrial disasters by its isolation and naturally conducive long-term storage temperatures.
